Victor Manuel Lopez, 53, currently of Southbury, CT, who resided in Cottage 42, passed away on Wednesday, December 25, 2019, in his home after a long illness. He was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, on August 4, 1966, to the late Victor Lopez and the late Eulalia Medina. In April 1975, he came to live at the Southbury Training School in Southbury, CT. Mr. Lopez was a pleasant gentleman who faced many challenges in his life, including epilepsy, blindness, intellectual disability, and paraplegia. Still, none of it stopped him from enjoying salsa music and being outdoors – especially near a waterfall where sounds of nature always brought comfort to him. He had excellent relationships with his caregivers and his family. He was involved with in-house day programs, which he enjoyed for over twenty-six years. We knew that his music therapy sessions and visits from his family were things he looked forward to as they were moments that brought joy and a sense of peace, that he loved to feel.
Mr. Lopez’s family would like to thank the residential and medical staff at Southbury Training School for their loving and compassionate care, and VITAS hospice who all cared for him during the toughest of times. He will be missed by his family and the many staff persons who have had the pleasure to work with him and gave him such unadulterated love, which he was blessed to have in his life.
Victor is survived by his brother Abimael Ortiz and his wife Rosalyn Diaz-Ortiz of New Haven, as well as nieces Coral L. Ortiz and Ciara R. Ortiz-Diaz, and nephew, Caleb A. Ortiz-Diaz.
A memorial service is planned for STS (Southbury Training School) at a later time.
