Maria T. Santaella

The Santaella Family would like to announce the passing of Maria T. Santaella "Mamita", beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, who peacefully entered into eternal rest on December 25, 2024, in Hamden, CT at the age of 78.
Maria was born in the beautiful neighborhood of La Cantera, San Juan, Puerto Rico, on October 13, 1946, to the late Timoteo Rivera and Juana Calderon. She was a woman of extraordinary faith, boundless love, and unwavering dedication to her family. Her spirit will forever be cherished by her children, grandchildren, siblings, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Maria was preceded in death by her loving husband, Ernesto Santaella Jr (2021), with whom she shared many joyful years of love, laughter, and dancing. Together, they were an iconic couple, known for their spirited salsa dances that were a joy to witness and a love that will forever be remembered by all who saw them together.
Maria is survived by her sons, Luis E. Santaella, (Diana-2018), Edgar E. (Denise) Santaella; her daughter, Dagmar I. Santaella; and her siblings, Griselle Falú and Ida Calderon. She was also predeceased by her sister, Irma Calderon, and her brother, Luis Rivera. Maria is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Sarah (Leuris Hernandez) Santaella, Samantha N. Santaella, Nickolas E. Santaella, Dhanniellie Freeman Santaella, and Harmony L. Santaella, each of whom she adored and who brought her immeasurable joy.
Maria’s professional journey included many years of dedicated service at the Capitolio in Puerto Rico, where she worked as an Administrative Assistant. Later, she continued her career in the U.S. mainland, where she became well-known for her work ethic & commitment to excellence at the Cornell Scott Hill Health Center, where she retired from. Her devotion to family extended beyond her work; she was the heart and soul of every gathering, especially during the Christmas season. Maria’s love for Christmas was legendary, as she took great care in planning and preparing for family celebrations. Every year, she would ensure that gifts were plentiful, dishes were delicious, and the home was filled with warmth, laughter, and love. Her Christmas gatherings were nothing short of spectacular, with her cooking, desserts, and the "Matutinos" becoming a much-anticipated tradition for all who were fortunate enough to partake.
A woman of deep conviction, Maria was firmly grounded in her faith, never compromising her beliefs or principles. She was known for her grace, wisdom, and willingness to share her life experiences with others. Maria was never judgmental but always remained true to herself and her values. Her relationship with God was central to her life, and she was an active member of her church Star of Jacob, where she served as the secretary for 20+ years.
She carried from her early days of shopping at G. Fox and Filene’s to her devoted visits to Macy’s. Her passion for finding great attire was evident and she made sure she was looking her best wherever she went.
Maria’s legacy is one of love, integrity, and devotion. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a loyal sister, and a cherished friend. She made an impact on everyone she met with her genuine spirit, her sense of humor, and her commitment to always making others feel valued and loved.
A funeral service and viewing time to celebrate her life will be held on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Star of Jacob Church, 506 Howard Avenue, New Haven, CT, beginning at 5:00 PM. until the conclusion of the service.
On Monday, December 30, 2024, Funeral Procession will depart at 10:00 AM for interment in the Evergreen Cemetery, 769 Ella T. Grasso Boulevard, New Haven, CT.
Funeraria Luz de Paz, 426 E. Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06608, has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements and is honored to be the funeral service of choice.
Maria's family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all those who have offered their support, prayers, and love during this difficult time. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May she rest in peace, surrounded by eternal love and light.
