Maria Mercedes Gonzalez

Born on October 30, 1940, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2024, in Milford, Connecticut, surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of the late Angel Gonzalez, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and companionship until his passing in December 2023.

Maria was the cherished daughter of Aida Conde and Salvador Sole, both of whom preceded her in death and she has one surviving older brother Angel Sole.  She leaves behind a legacy through her children: her sons Miguel Angel and Raymond Anthony & her daughter Maryann. A proud Grandma her pride and joy were her grandchildren: Brian, Brett, and Tyler Vargas, and Michael, Angel, Mason, and Ava Gonzalez. Maria’s love for her family, especially her grandchildren, was unmatched. She had a special connection with them, always showing her care and affection.

Known for her feisty, stubborn, and loving spirit, Maria left an impression wherever she went. She was a talented cook and had a deep love for music and choreography. She also had a passion for music and dancing, often filling her home with joy and laughter during family gatherings. In her younger years, she formed a group called "La Estrellita del Caribe," where she shared her passion for dance with a group of young girls from the neighborhood. It was another way she allowed others to embrace her culture, which she was extremely proud of.

Maria had an undeniable bond with her husband, Angel. She often recalled the first time she laid eyes on him in the 1950s, boldly declaring, "He is gonna be mine." And indeed, he was hers until his passing. She was also well-known for her signature phrases, especially "God bless you" to everyone she came across. And if she began a sentence with "I'm sorry to tell you," her family knew that a hard truth was coming, even if she wasn't really sorry. Her sense of humor will be unforgettable, creating moments to last a lifetime.

Maria was deeply connected to her faith, regularly attending mass in New York and, after moving to Connecticut, periodically visiting her local parish. Her relationship with God was vital in her life. She also had a passion for music and dancing, often filling her home with joy and laughter during family gatherings.  Her presence at the family events was never missed, and when she wasn’t there, her absence was keenly felt. Her love, vibrancy, and strong will shall live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
