Gabriela "Gabi" Gomes, 87, returned to the loving arms of the Lord on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at the Northbridge Nursing Home, Bridgeport, CT surrounded by her family. She was born on the Cape Verde Islands to the late Luzia "Vovo Mimosa" Gomes. She moved to the United States over 20 years ago to be closer to her family but she never forgot her beloved Cape Verde and generously gave what she could to those who were still back home.
Gabi was a brave and courageous woman. As a single mother, she faced numerous challenges to provide for her family and selflessly gave all that she had to them. Amidst all that went on in her busy home, she maintained it impeccably. She was a magician in the kitchen creating delicious meals even when there was little to work with, yet her stove was always sparkling clean. Gabi had a charismatic personality that endeared her to all those she met. She thrived in convivial atmospheres and everyone made it a point to greet her and get one of her warm smiles. Often times there was a line of people waiting to spend a few moments with her. Even when her illness engulfed her body the brightness in her eyes and the warmth of her smile were constant. She was petite in stature but a giant to all those who had the honor to know her. She will truly be missed.
Gabi leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving children Maria Ledo Pontes, Jose Rui Gomes, Filomena Gomes, Carlos Vieira, Paula Rocha, John M. Gomes, Roberto Barbosa and Patricia Helena Gomes, her adoring 23 grandchildren and beloved 24 great-grandchildren and another one on the way and a host of friends and family that will miss her immensely. She was predeceased by a daughter Maria Eunice Gomes.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022, from 5:00 -8:00 PM and Saturday, March 5, from 7:45 -8:45 AM. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1282 Noble Avenue, Bridgeport, CT.
