Benita Fernandez of Bridgeport, CT, age 97, has passed away in peaceful rest on March 3, 2022 in Lord Chamberlain Nursing Home where she had been receiving compassionate care for the past four years.
She was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico to Carmen and Marcelino Velazquez.
She relocated to New York City in the late 1940s where she developed a passion for beautiful shoes and the movies. She took her young daughter every day to the movies. They were fans to all the movie opening-nights on Broadway. Her favorite actor was Clark Gable in “Gone with the Wind”. Her daughter actually learned English from watching this movie so many times.
She retired from Bridgeport Hospital after 30 years as Supervisor of the Housekeeping Department where she would also volunteer to serve as an interpreter for patients. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. After retirement, she joined and volunteered at the SADA Senior Center for many years where she loved playing bingo, winning at bingo, music and dancing. She would save all her quarters for casino trips. Benita is survived by her daughter, Maria Benita Lyons and her husband Bob of Milford, CT, grandchildren “Nana” to Mary and Manuel Torrado, great-grandson Luke Torrado. Interment will be held immediately after at Lakeview Cemetary
