Amalia Mercado Hernandez (Rodriguez), 90, passed away peacefully on November 1, 2024. Born on May 16, 1934, in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, Amalia was known for her boundless joy and a deep love for music and dancing. She cherished good food and was renowned for her exceptional culinary skills, creating unforgettable meals with whatever she had, always guided by her remarkable palate.
In 1965, Amalia moved to the United States and eventually made her home in Bridgeport, Connecticut, where she lived most of her life. She held a special affection for New York, where her beloved brother resided. A proud woman, she was also deeply connected to her roots, maintaining close relationships with her family, including her late parents, Nicolasa Hernandez and Pedro Mercado. Known for her strong will and conviction, Amalia’s strength of character left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
Amalia is survived by her loving children: Norma (Arthur) Waller, Amado C. Rodriguez, Ada M. Rodriguez, Jose A. (Carmen Guzman) Rios, Jacqueline (Miguel Ramos) Ortiz, Guillermo (Miriam Ortiz) Ortiz, Marlene Ortiz, and Johanna Rodriguez. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Leanna Waller, Alexis Waller, Jose Rios Jr., Ashley Rios, Oswaldo Collazo, Tania Collazo, Guillermo Ortiz Jr., Vanessa Alicea, Joseph Alicea, Eduardo Cortes Jr., and Eilene Ortiz; and her treasured great-grandchildren: Nathalia Quiles, Gabriel Quiles, Jaiden Roberts, Karimar Rios, Jeremyah Rosario, Elijah Padilla, Leilanni Padilla, Eduardo Cortes III, David Alicea, and Leira Alicea. She is also survived by her dear sister, Gloria Mercado.
Amalia’s family and friends will gather to honor her life on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, with a viewing from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., celebrating the beautiful memories and joy she shared with all.
